At last night’s Satoyama movement event, a new movement and some new units were announced. Firstly, the new movement is called the Satoumi movement. It will most likely have something to do with preserving the ocean, since my crackerjack Google skills tell me that “umi” means “sea”.
As for the new units, not much is known except for the names and the lineups. They all have names puzzled the English speaking wota-verse. Here’s a breakdown:
DiaLady features two girls who are always in the forefront of their respective groups- Sugaya Risako from Berryz Kobo and Suzuki Airi from C-ute. The name DiaLady seems to be a portmanteau of “diamond” and “lady”. How random, right? Actually, you will notice that both girls are born within days of each other in April 1994. And, the diamond is the birthstone for the month of April. Not to mention the diamond’s status as the most precious of precious stones. As a duo, I’m sure “Diamond Lady” is also a send up to the Showa idol duo Pink Lady. Does it all fit together? I think yes, but the name is still strange to Western ears.
Next we have “Plumeria”, a group consisting of Nakajima Saki and Hagiwara Mai from C-ute, Fukuda Kanon from S/mileage, and Ishida Ayumi and Ikuta Erina from Morning Musume. I saw a few tweets last night WTF-ing on this name, too. Since I live in California, have a plant crazy mom, and love to visit Hawaii I can tell you that a plumeria is a lovely flowering plant that can grow to be as large as a tree in Hawaii. The plumeria flower is delicate, soft, and emits a very pleasing fragrance. The plumeria flower is a five-petaled flower. Get it? Beautiful flower? Five girls, five petals? I don’t think this is much of a naming stretch as DiaLady, but apparently the word sounds exotic to some Western ears.
Lastly, we have the group consisting of Tokunaga Chinami and Natsuyaki Miyabi from Berryz Kobo, and Yajima Maimi and Okai Chisato from C-ute. This group gavee me the fits as I tried to make heads-or-tails of the name. Of course, when I first heard the name, I heard the name was “Melloquat” which immediately brought “Loquat” (or this) to my mind. MellowQuad makes more sense since it is portmanteau of mellow and quad. “Mellow” might give an indication of the sound of the group- soothing and relaxing. Also, there are four girls- hence “Quad”.
There are a number of girls who are participating in both Satoyama and Satoumi groups (Miyabi, Chinami, Eripon, etc.). I personally look forward to seeing Plumeria since most of the girls in the group are favorites of mine (Kanon and Eripon? my heads gonna explode). I am also looking for great things from Dialady as the Risako and Airi are among the best singers in the Hello! Project Kids. Maybe they’ll sound like this duet of VERY BEAUTY from 2008 Berryz Kamen vs. Cutie Ranger Battle Concert.
