Over at New School Kaidan, I write a few words about some of the recently released promotional videos. This is a collection of those write-ups, with a few words sometimes added after a week+ of viewing.
This week we have Promotional videos from: Tentenko, Mako x Hitomi, Tsuri Bit, Beboga, Questy, MIKA♡MISA, Seno Sister, and every♥ing! Unfortunately because I’m on a bit of a vacation, I won’t be adding any Review+ … I’m so sorry if this is your favorite part of my weekly articles.
BUT, as a new year’s resolution, I am going to add a poll in this and subsequent weeks! Now you can vote for your favorite promotional videos every week with no need to justify your choices!
Tentenko – Kuruma
“Kuruma”, the lead track from Tentenko’s latest release “Kogyo Seihin” gets a promotional video, and boy is it a doozy. The song underneath all the electro punk groove is clearly pop, you just need to excavate the melodies from the harsh machine gun rattles. The melody plays like the sing-song we’ve heard from much of Tentenko’s previoius pop releases. I think the visual language of the promotional video is probably the real story here. It’s clear we are attending a funeral: black clothes and a well-furnished sedan drive that point home. But, who or what is being buried? We are shown lots of fruit including a banana suggestively split longitudinally, raw crystals spin on platters, glass breaks and reforms, and a gun is produced from a sensual stocking. In one particularly gorgeous shot, milk and tea are poured together into a tea cup. Man, one could probably spend all day trying to decode this one. Although I have my personal opinions, I won’t deprive you of the fun of unearthing this video yourself.
Mako x Arai Hitomi – Yuki ya Konko
This whole “twin dance” trend is really something, isn’t it? Capitalizing further on this trend is Super Sport Xebio with their version of the Children’s Song “Yuki ya Konko” featuring Tokyo Girls’ Syle‘s Arai Hitomi and MakoMina‘s Mako. If you haven’t heard of MakoMina before, they are one of the more prominent Futago Dance duos. You can watch their PPAP version featuring Pikotaro himself here or you can sample more of their work here. Better yet, you can click on their links below. Regarding “Yuki ya Konko”, the girls look super cute as they dance through a store location. Gradually Mako and Hitomi gear up for what is sure to be the cutest snow trip of all time. Hopefully Super Sport Xebio will sell lots of snowboards and snow pants and fuzzy caps from this collaboration.
Tsuri Bit – My Victory
Tsuri Bit’s latest digital single won’t be released until February 1, 2017, but the promotional video is already here. “My Victory” starts with the girls leaving class after a particularly demoralizing assignment – a career assessment. After making their way outdoors they meet … well, a freaking dude. Decked in bright bold patterns and identity obscuring glasses, Mr. Mysterious implants the idea in the girls’ heads to become idols. It doesn’t end there, because their homeroom teacher finds them and gives them a cross-dressed performance. I probably said too much already; I’ll can it right here. Tsuri Bit is one of those idol acts that I always find myself drawn to, and not because of my fond childhood memories on fishing boats. “My Victory” culminates in a great performance that really gets to the heart of the idol occupation, making the song and PV a highlight of this week’s releases.
Beboga – Drama Yori mo Dramatic
When the baddies show up, what do you do? Right … call the Super Sentai! And, when they get a nasty leg cramp you go right to Beboga. In their hilarious send up to the Tokusatsu, the onetime Baseball Girls try some advanced tactics to fend off some serious masked baddies. I don’t want to spoil all the fun, but I’m sure you’ll recognize much of the crime-fighting action employed in “Drama Yori mo Dramatic”. If there’s any justice left in the world, this promotional video wins all sorts of awards for its entertainment quotient and its replay value. Not familiar with Beboga? Look no further- DLJ can give you a quick education. The second single from Beboga, will find its way onto records store shelves on February 7, 2017.
Questy – Fantasy
Questy is a dance and vocal unit under Avex Trax formed, at least in part, as a promotional tool for the Toei’s 60th anniversary anime “Pop in Q”. You may remember P.IDL’s promotional video for the opening theme of this same project. The anime’s plot centers around a virtual fantasy world and dancing to save said world. “Fantasy” is the closing theme to the movie. This promotional video really shows great potential in this group of seven girls as they dance in a set that looks like a Minecraft disaster area. Questionable set aside, I like the effect of the girls changing outfits with every bounce of the choreography, and this really showcases the consistency of the girls’ dance. Hopefully Questy won’t just be a one-off unit and we will see more of them in the future. “Fantasy” materializes at retailers on December 21, 2017.
MIKA♡MISA – MAKE HONEY
You can file this under “Interesting Idol Rap Collaborations”. Mika from twin idol duo Mika☆Rika and MC Misaki from idol rap group Rhymeberry form MIKA♡MISA. The track is a bouncing jazzy number meant to brighten up your winter day. Really, I love both groups to pieces, so this collaboration does me just fine. I especially love the choreography that’s not particularly choreographed- it’s cute and bouncy like the track itself. As for the rest of the PV: well, its just the girls in front of a green screen while some visual producer does his/her thing. Let’s just say the main attraction here is the girls in their honey quest. “MAKE HONEY” hits your favorite retailer on December 21, 2016.
Seno Sister – Winter Night
Seno Sister have a great winter themed song, and they want to share with you! “Winter Night” follows Mao, Youtan, and Mika around on titular winter night filled with lights, Christmas trees, fuzzy sweaters, and cozy mufflers. The song features retro sounds and structure and a pop melody that places this song squarely with the other flashback sounds that you know I love so dearly. On top of this, you can download “Winter Night” for FREE!
every♥ing! – Churu Churu Chu Chu Chu (Short ver.)
Seiyu idol duo every♥ing! release the short version for the album track “Churu Churu Chu Chu Chu”. Like the album title implies, Ibuki and Erii find themselves knee deep on dates with very inoffensive bunny man (well, I find his overalls a bit offensive). Unlike many idol PVs, rather than a big group date, our hero gets to got out with each girl individually. One girl gets purikura with Mr. Bunny while the other one plays some spirited air hockey, and I’ve never contemplated donning a animal costume more than I did watching the 1:45 min of “Churu Churu Chu Chu Chu”. I’m a confessed fan of good ole pop music, so this light, bouncy gem does me just fine. Just fine, indeed. Listen: Kido Ibuki and Yamazaki Erii are SUPER cute, so you can do much worse than spend 2 minutes with this video. You can find “Churu Churu Chu Chu Chu” on every ing!’s “Colorful Shining Dream First Date ♥” to be released on January 18, 2017.
Actor’s School Hiroshima – Japan GOOD!
You probably know Actor’s School Hiroshima (ASH) from their stellar alumni. The performing arts school figures big in the idol community with graduates including PERFUME, Morning Musume’s Sayashi Riho, Babymetal’s Nakamoto Suzuka, Nogizaka46’s Nakamoto Himeka, and new idol unit Manaminorisa. “Japan GOOD!” looks like a very polished student group exploring their options by sending their product out in the world through their school’s connections. Other than this, precious little about this quartet can be gleaned without further investigation … which feels weird to me. If you want to learn more, here’s the ASH website. Otherwise, enjoy this promotional video.
